Pop singer M.I.A. pushed back against online claims that got her booted off rapper Kid Cudi’s tour this past weekend, saying allegedly “offensive remarks” were misinterpreted and mischaracterized.
Clips showed the “Paper Planes” songstress telling a crowd in Dallas, Texas, that half her team was unable to be at the show because they were unable to get visas.
At the Kid Cudi concert with MIA she started randomly started talking about how she’s a Republican & how at that concert there’s probably a bunch of illegals that she’s having to play too. People started booing her & quite a few left & asked for a refund. She ended her career. pic.twitter.com/nc9w4QpiD9

Other clips showed the crowd booing M.I.A., with online posters claiming: “she opened the show saying ‘we won’t do illegal (the song), though some of you could be in the audience’ before going on a Republican rant,” which was later reported by The Rolling Stone.

Reports claimed M.I.A. also told the crowd, “I’ve been canceled for many reasons. I never thought I would be canceled for being a brown Republican voter.”
The online controversy and crowd reception prompted Kid Cudi to announce Monday he’d released M.I.A. from his Rebel Ragers tour, saying he’d warned her team not to do anything offensive.
“TOUR UPDATE: M.I.A is no longer on this tour,” Kid Cudi wrote on Instagram. “I told my management to send a notice to her team before we started tour that I didn’t want anything offensive at my shows, cuz I already knew what time it was, and I was assured things were understood.”

“After the last couple shows, I’ve been flooded with messages from fans that were upset by her rants. This, to me, is very disappointing and I wont have someone on my tour making offensive remarks that upsets my fanbase. Thank you for understanding. Rager.”
On Monday, M.I.A. pushed back against the claims, saying her song “Illygal” was from 2010 and she wrote the song “BEFORE YOU THOUGHT IMMIGRANT RIGHTS WERE COOL.”
I WROTE ILLYGAL ON THE MAYA LP A SONG FROM 2010.
I STARTED THIS INTRO TO THE SONG WITH THE STATEMENT SAYING I’M ILLYGAL, AND I SAID MY TEAM HASN’T GOTTEN VISAS YET. THEN PLAYED A SONG THAT HAD LYRICS SAYING “FU&% THE LAW”, WHICH I STILL BELIEVE, IF THE LAW IS UNJUST F@%& IT.DO NOT GAS LIGHT MY WORDS. THAT IS THE WORK OF SATAN.
I WROTE BORDERS AND ILLYGAL AND PAPER PLANES BEFORE YOU THOUGHT IMMIGRANT RIGHTS WERE COOL. I’VE HAD THSES BATTLES BY MYSELF WITHOUT THE HELP OF MILLIONS OF FANS BACKING ME . I DON’T NEED THIS VIRTUE SIGNAL ERA TO ALL OF A SUDDEN ERASE AN ENTIRE LIFE I’VE LED. JESUS WAS AN IMMIGRANT AND A REBEL. I HAVE NO APPOLGY FOR THE JUDGEMENTAL THE WICKED AND THE IGNORENT, FOR THOSE ARE SPIRITS THAT WE MUST OVER COME IN OUR LIVES AND IN THIS WORLD.
JESUS RETURNS TO LEAD THE WORLD JUSTLY BECAUSE THERE IS INJUSTICE IN THIS WORLD . IM PROUD OF THOSE WHO FIGHT FOR IT EVERYDAY. GOD BLESS YOU. 🙏🏽

For years, M.I.A. has faced significant backlash for her political beliefs, including being denied a US visa for her criticism of the Sri Lankan civil war, being blacklisted for criticizing the Black Lives Matter movement, being dropped from tours for professing her support of President Donald Trump, and being mocked by the establishment for appearing on The Alex Jones Show, where she introduced her OHMNI line of anti-5G/EMF apparel.
