The New York Times has petitioned a courthouse in the city for the release of a “suicide note” apparently written by Jeffrey Epstein while he was being detained.
Nicholas Tartaglione, Epstein’s cellmate, said he found the note in July 2019, a month before his death.
The note was sealed as part of a criminal case against Tartaglione, but on Thursday the New York Times petitioned the judge to allow it to be uncovered, claiming it could “provide insights into [Epstein’s] state of mind.”
A spokesperson for the Department of Justice (DoJ) told The Times the Department had not seen the note.
Tartaglione, a former police officer serving four life sentences, said he came across the note when Epstein was moved to a different area of the Metropolitan Correctional Center.
The note was apparently in the pages of a graphic novel.
“I opened the book to read and there it was,” Tartaglione said.
He went on to say that he gave the note to his lawyers in case he was accused of harming Epstein.
Tartaglione’s lawyers are alleged to have authenticated the note, which has not been released as part of the Epstein files. It is, however, referred to in a two-page document titled “Chronology,” which states Tartaglione found the note “sometime between 7/23 and 7/27.”
In April, acting Attorney General Todd Blanche said the DoJ’s Epstein files have all been released.
“We have released everything,” Blanche told Fox News.
“So we are not sitting on a single piece of paper. Nothing that should be released. If we find something else tomorrow, we’ll release it. I don’t anticipate we will,” Blanche continued.
“So the misguided assumption that there is more to be released is because we reviewed millions and millions of pages within the department, millions of which had nothing to do with Epstein,” the acting DOJ chief added.
