Secretary of War Pete Hegseth has ordered the withdrawal of 5,000 US troops from Germany.
A Pentagon spokesman announced the decision on Friday.
“This decision follows a thorough review of the Department’s force posture in Europe and is in recognition of theater requirements and conditions on the ground,” spokesman Sean Parnell said.
The withdrawal is expected to take between six and 12 months.
Earlier this week, as tensions between President Trump and German Chancellor Friedrich Merz continued over the Iran War, President Trump said he was considering a reduction in the number of active troops in Germany.
At present, there are 36,500 troops in the country, the second-highest number of US troops in a foreign country after Japan.
US troops have been stationed in Germany continuously since the end of World War II.
Numbers there reached a peak of 250,000 during the Cold War.
Chancellor Merz has been a persistent critic of the Iran War.
On Wednesday he said “an entire nation is being humiliated by the Iranian leadership,” after peace talks in Pakistan stalled.
Trump responded to Merz’s criticism on Truth Social the next day, telling him to stop interfering in the Middle East conflict.
“The Chancellor of Germany should spend more time on ending the war with Russia/Ukraine (Where he has been totally ineffective!), and fixing his broken Country, especially immigration and Energy, and less time on interfering with those that are getting rid of the Iran Nuclear threat, thereby making the World, including Germany, a safer place!” Trump said.
