A top scientist from Harvard has defected to China and will lend his world-leading expertise to the nation’s program to create a new army of AI-augmented “super-soldiers.”

The New York Post reports, “Charles Lieber, the former chair of Harvard’s chemistry department, has resurfaced as the founding director of Shenzhen’s Institute for Brain Research Advanced Interfaces and Neurotechnologies, also known as i-BRAIN.

“Scientists in the military wing of the Chinese Communist Party have been working on brain-computer interfaces—Lieber is one of the world’s leading researchers in the field—to boost mental agility and situational awareness to engineer super soldiers.”

Lieber’s new lab is entirely funded by the Chinese government.

Brain-computer interfaces are now a “national priority” according to the Chinese Communist Party’s latest five-year plan, released in March.

Lieber was convicted of lying to federal authorities in 2021 about his links to China’s Thousand Talents program, which was established to lure foreign researchers to China.

While still at Harvard, Lieber was promised $750,000 a year to set up a research lab in China, funds he hid from the IRS.

After the discovery of his fraud, he was placed on administrative leave, and he retired.

His conviction was part of an initiative launched under the first Trump administration to counter Chinese espionage and theft of American intellectual property. The initiative was scrapped under President Biden.

Although Lieber’s new role working for the Chinese government was announced last year, it was only discovered and reported in the Western press this week.

The Post continues: “In his state-funded lab in Shenzhen—which in the last decades morphed from fishing village to China’s Silicon Valley—he has better resources than he did in the US, with unfettered access to primate research facilities he didn’t have at Harvard and top chip-making equipment, the investigation found.

“His lab sits within a sprawling campus of institutions bankrolled by billions of dollars from the CCP, with signs saying, ‘Innovate with the Party.’”

Lieber has taken at least one other top scientist from Harvard with him.

In interviews, Lieber has claimed his research “benefits all of humanity,” and said he decided to move to Shenzhen because “I cannot do this in the US any longer.”

Despite being on supervised release, Lieber was allowed to travel to China at least three times in 2024.
