Independent journalist Nick Shirley joined News Nation this week to share his experience traveling to Cuba to document the state of the island nation as the Trump administration considers military intervention to replace its communist government.

Shirley said his visit was “dicey” at times, being followed by security and questioned at a hotel.

“As soon as we arrived, they took all my camera gear. I only brought two GoPros, a few microphones, my Meta Glasses. They let me keep my iPhone and I had a small microphone hidden in the bottom of my backpack,” he explained.

When the journalist’s security guards noticed “spies” tailing them, they suggested leaving the country as soon as possible and devised a plan to head back to America.

Attempting to leave their hotel at around four in the morning, staff said they couldn’t exit the building and told them someone was there to meet them.

“It was a two-star general of communist Cuba who wanted to interrogate me about my visit,” Shirley said.

The general reportedly questioned the journalist about what he was asking people and why he was leaving early.

“He eventually said, ‘You’re good to go.’ And, they said a taxi would be there to take us to the airport. There was no taxi and we waited for a few minutes and figured it might be a setup. So, we then set out on foot in the middle of the morning in Havana, Cuba, and we found a tricycle that goes about ten miles per hour to take us to the airport,” he told News Nation.

Then, Shirley’s security was “cornered” at the airport as they tried to retrieve his confiscated camera gear, with officials relaying that the Cuban president was allegedly aware of their presence.

The journalist said he was able to speak with some Havana locals about life under communism, saying the totalitarian government is so terrified of the country’s poor conditions being exposed that they sent the two-star general to intimidate his crew.
