Comedian Bill Maher slammed fellow comedian Howie Mandel during a podcast appearance, blasting the latter’s claims that black people have to fear police because they’re shot more than white people, who have “privilege.”

In the exchange, Maher asked, “How many people do you think the police shoot a year?” to which Mandel replied, “I don’t know.”

“See? So you’re talking out of your ass,” Maher responded, going on to point out police shoot about 1,000 people per year.

“And how many how many of that is, are white people?” Maher continued, with Mandel again asking, “Tell me.”

“So again, we’re having the discussion…. you’re so sure of yourself. You don’t even know the stats,” Maher blasted Mandel.

Mandel went on to claim that when he taught his kids how to drive he was worried about them “driving safely,” while his black friends “have to have an added discussion that I’ve never had with my kids.”

Maher proceeded to elucidate Mandel on the facts, saying that out of the 1,000 people shot by police per year, about three quarters are white.

“But since blacks are only 14% of the population, that’s almost twice the percentage of what it would be,” Maher said, adding, “But police also have many more encounters with black people. So you have to figure in all these things.”

The discussion unfolded during a discussion on the “Howie Mandel Does Stuff” podcast in 2022, but the viral clip is being revisited this week on social media.

Here’s a longer clip of the conversation:
