A large-scale drone attack was launched by Ukraine against oil infrastructure around St Petersburg.

Russia’s second city has a population of six million and is home to vital infrastructure, including terminals for transporting oil and natural gas via the Baltic Sea.

The port of Vysotsk, about 105 miles from St Peterburg, was hit. The port is used to transport oil, grain, coal and liquified natural gas.

Reports suggest the naval base at Kronstadt was also hit.

In a post on X, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said, “Last night, our Ukrainian long-range sanctions against Russia over this war reached targets near St. Petersburg. Ukraine’s Defense Forces struck port oil infrastructure that generates revenue for Russia’s war, and there were also successful strikes on Kronstadt – an important military target. The distance from Ukraine’s state border is more than 850 kilometers.

“My thanks to everyone who is ensuring Ukraine’s precision and carrying out our long-range sanctions plan. Glory to Ukraine!”

At the end of June, Zelensky announced a new “influence operation” designed to bring the war—which has now lasted longer than the First World War—to an end.

The operation involves strikes on key facilities keeping the Russian war machine moving, including energy and factories making equipment used for missiles and other weapons.

Attacks on Russian fuel infrastructure have led to shortages across Russia.
