Iran’s new Supreme Leader Mojtaba Khamenei has been conspicuously absent from the public memorial for his father in Tehran.

Three of Ayatollah Khamenei’s other sons prayed beside their father’s coffin and four other family members on Sunday, but Mojtaba was not present.

Mostafa, Meysam and Masoud Khamenei appeared on Iranian state television beside their father’s coffin, which had been laid out in the courtyard of the Imam Khomeini Grand Mosalla.

A week of funeral processions is being staged for the late leader, who was killed during the opening salvos of the war with the US and Israel, which began on 28 February.

This will include transporting his body to Shia holy sites in Iraq.

Mojtaba Khamenei has still yet to be seen in public after succeeding his father.

He was also injured in the strikes that killed his father and is said to be severely disfigured, with serious injuries to one or both of his legs.

Peace talks continue between the US and Iran, but have been paused for a week, according to President Trump, to allow mourning for the country’s former leader.

Millions are reported to have paid their respects to Ayatollah Khamenei, including the country’s President and Parliamentary Speaker.

The mood among the mourners was angry and defiant. Some held signs calling for the assassination of president Trump.

“Our word is one. Revenge! Revenge!” the crowd shouted.

Khamenei’s body was displayed in a casket draped with the Iranian flag. A black turban was placed on top—a symbol of his direct descent from the Prophet Mohammad.
