Authorities have captured dozens of illegal aliens who bailed out of a tractor-trailer after the driver fled from a checkpoint in South Texas this week.
The incident unfolded during the early hours of Friday in the Rio Grande Valley.
After an 18-wheeler pulled into a U.S. Border Patrol (USBP) checkpoint near Sarita, agents observed that the driver appeared to be “extremely nervous.”
After telling agents he was transporting produce in a non-refrigerated trailer, the driver was referred to the x-ray area for secondary inspection.
“The tractor trailer traveled northbound driving by the backscatter truck without being scanned. Responding quickly, an agent located the tractor and conducted a traffic stop,” Customs and Border Protection (CBP) explained in a statement.
Up to 80 people were riding in the trailer, nearly 60 of whom were apprehended by Friday evening, KIII TV reports.
Local residents were urged to secure their homes and remain inside as federal and local agencies searched for absconders for hours.
“We had Border Patrol, we had BORTAC, we had Border Star. We had a helicopter in the air also and one of the things I had expressed is move them further out into the brush and away from the community,” Kleberg County Constable Jesse Rivera stated.
It is unclear how many of the escapees are still on the loose at this time.
