Report: DHS Orders ICE To Halt Traffic Stops As Two Killed In Recent Days

The Department of Homeland Security has reportedly ordered Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents to temporarily suspend most traffic stops used to arrest deportation suspects, following two officer-involved deaths over the past week.

ABC News reports the order from DHS Secretary Markwayne Mullin to immigration officers came at the behest of Sen. Susan Collins (R-Maine), who said she’d urged the chief to “cease all non-urgent vehicle stops,” following the ICE-involved shooting death of 26-year-old Columbian national Joan Sebastian Guerrero in Biddeford.

“The vehicle attempted to flee the scene and fearing for public safety an officer discharged his weapon,” ICE wrote in a statement.

Footage from a nearby laundromat shows Guerrero evading officers in his vehicle and leading them on a chase before officers fired on him.

Other footage showed agents pull the man’s lifeless body from the vehicle before cuffing him.

That death followed another ICE-involved shooting last Tuesday where ICE officers in Houston, Texas, shot and killed 52-year-old Lorenzo Salgado Araujo, who was not the subject of a warrant, after he reportedly used his vehicle to ram officers.

Fox News correspondent Bill Melugin noted the change would be temporary until officers receive updated training.

ABC News reports via an anonymous source that “ICE will still use vehicle stops in cases involving the most dangerous targets.”

News of DHS’s traffic stop suspension follows reports Tuesday that another man died in an immigration-related incident, where four occupants of a vehicle stopped at a gas station in St. Augustine, Fla., scattered as ICE agents approached them, with one man killed after he was hit by a semi tractor trailer as he attempted to run across a busy road.
