Lebanon’s President Joseph Aoun will arrive in Washington DC today for the next stage of peace negotiations with Israel.
Lebanon and Israel entered an agreement in June that requires Israel to return control of southern Lebanon to the government, in exchange for the disarming of Hezbollah, a paramilitary group that is aligned with Iran.
A bilateral summit, involving representatives of Israel, is expected to take place at the White House.
Aoun’s office has said he anticipates meeting with American officials to talk about “the possible means to consolidate the ceasefire, restore security and stability to Lebanon in general and the south in particular, the withdrawal of Israel from the Lebanese areas it occupies, and the extension of the state’s authority over all areas.”
Hostilities between Israel and Hezbollah were renewed following the 7 October 2023 attacks on Israel by Hamas.
Israeli forces reentered southern Lebanon in October 2024.
An uneasy ceasefire was broken when the US and Israel attacked Iran at the end of February, as Hezbollah targeted Israel with rocket and drone attacks.
Peace between Israel and Hezbollah has become one of the key conditions for an end to the war between the US and Iran.
Although the new peace framework agreed by the US and Iran on 17 June called for an end to hostilities between Israel and Hezbollah, fighting erupted again after Hezbollah killed four Israeli soldiers.

You could get rid of all of Hezbollah in Lebanon, Israel would make another excuse to invade. Israel is well known to fund terrorists, creating new groups when needed.
