Pop singer Katy Perry rebuked the White House Saturday after it featured one of her songs in a TikTok video showing the destruction of Iranian ports – but the vocalist apparently has no leg to stand on after she sold the rights to her music.
Perry took to X Saturday slamming the Trump administration for using her hit “Firework” to supposedly glamorize war.
“I am deeply appalled and angry to see ‘Firework’ used on the @WhiteHouse TikTok account as a backing track for video footage of military strikes. I did not approve this, I was not asked, and I absolutely do not condone it,” Perry wrote.
She continued: “I wrote this song to be an anthem of hope, healing, and inner strength for people going through their darkest personal moments. To see a message of self-worth and upliftment weaponized to soundtrack destruction and violence is a complete violation of everything my song stands for. My music is for bringing people together, not celebrating warfare.”
The TikTok video in question appears to be one posted Thursday, which shows various US strikes on Iranian ports and infrastructure near the contested Strait of Hormuz, while a portion of “Firework” is overlaid.

Some pointed out that the singer sold her music catalog back in 2023 for $225 million, making her opinion about the music she no longer owns irrelevant.

Others also highlighted the singer had no qualms about her tunes being associated with war in 2012 when she released a thinly-veiled US military propaganda music video for her song “Part Of Me” during Obama’s presidency.

The White House has not yet responded to Perry’s post as of writing, but her complaint follows a long line of left-leaning musical artists raising a huge fuss over the Trump administration using their music.

She didn’t actually sell off her entire catalog. As stated in one of the comments quoted in the article, she sells licenses to her songs so other people can use them legally.
War is the most useless of all human endeavors. It creates nothing and destroys us told amounts of resources and infrastructure. It only serves the ultra-rich and ultra-powerful. In a Far Right AnCap society there would be no wars as they are illogical and serve no purpose.
