Berlin police are seeking an Islamic extremist after a gay-pride parade was attacked on Saturday evening.

“According to current findings, it concerns a man known to the police who is attributed to the Islamist spectrum,” a Berlin police spokesman said.

The man, 21-year-old “Abdul B,” used a white car to ram revellers in the Großer Tiergarten area of the city at around 10pm.

One person was killed and 16 others were injured. Several have life-threatening injuries.

The driver escaped and is still being sought by authorities.

The event was a Christopher Street Daty pride parade. The event is one of the largest LGBT events in Europe, and hundreds of thousands of people were in attendance along the parade’s route.

Berlin Mayor Kai Wegner denounced the incident as “an attack on our free and open society.”

“After a peaceful and colorful CSD, the assembly for a tolerant and peaceful Berlin was attacked in the most brutal way. Berlin is the city of freedom—and our freedom has been attacked in the most horrific way today. My thoughts are with the victims, their families and friends.”

Germany has been subject to a number of car-ramming attacks in recent years.

In May, two people were killed and several were wounded by a driver in Leipzig.

In December 2024, a Saudi Arabian man rammed visitors to a Christmas market in Magdeburg. Five were killed and more than 200 were injured.

Taleb al-Abdulmohsen was convicted and sentenced in June to life in prison for the attack.
