The Pentagon quietly updated its tally of casualties from the Iran war over the weekend, adding another 140, to bring the total to more than 600.
The Defense Casualty Analysis System (DCAS) recorded the new casualties and also introduced a new category for “Overseas Operations,” which records personnel killed and wounded from 7 July.
This effectively splits the Iran war into two separate phases.
The tally for the early phase, “Operation Epic Fury,” is 14 killed and 400 wounded.
The second phase began after the collapse of the ceasefire on 6 July. Officials have disputed whether the casualties from the early phase should be included with those from the second phase.
The dispute arises from the Trump administration’s claim that the clock was “paused” on 1 May when a ceasefire between the US and Iran, to enable negotiations, took effect. This claim was tied to the provisions of the War Power Act of 1973, which requires the president to end military operations within a period of 60 days unless Congress authorizes them to be extended.
The combined total for the two phases is 18 killed and 624 wounded.
