The H-E-B grocery retailer in Texas is notifying customers that junk food is no longer able to be bought with SNAP (Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program) benefits, following new changes at the state and federal levels.
Shoppers snapped pics of the changes going into effect at H-E-B grocery stores, with signs in snack aisles informing customers they’ll have to pay actual money for the sugar-laden treats and soft drinks.

The signs state, “Texas SNAP Changes effective April 1st: All candy and some sweetened drinks are no longer SNAP eligible.”
The sign features a crossed-out “SNAP” logo, adding that “Items with this logo are not eligible for SNAP. Look for shelf tags to find non-eligible items.”

The new rules come after the Health and Human Services Administration approved a waiver from Texas Gov. Greg Abbott (R) asking to “prohibit the purchase of sweetened drinks and candy” with SNAP benefits.
A document shows under the new rules sodas, fruit drinks, energy drinks, candy and candied nuts are non-eligible, however cookies, snack cakes and ice cream can still be purchased.

“In Texas, if a drink has any artificial sweetener (Aspartame, Sucralose, etc.) it is now NOT EBT Eligible,” a paragraph describing the “artificial” rule states.
Health and Human Services Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. described last year how Americans spend $72.9 million per day in EBT benefits on junk food.
“We spend $405 million a day on food stamps. That’s what the taxpayer is spending. 10% is going to sugary drinks. Another 8% is going to candies. So we are poisoning 60% of our kids who are getting food stamps,” RFK said at an event celebrating Texas’ move last August.
