More than 20,000 unsafe foreign drivers have been removed from America’s roads over the last year thanks to President Trump’s Executive Order on trucking reform.
Over 28,000 fraudulently issued Commercial Driver’s Licenses (CDLs) have been revoked nationwide since last year, and close to 7,000 unqualified training providers have been shut down.
“The Trump Administration has hit major milestones in our efforts to rein in the trucking industry, which has been allowed to operate like the Wild, Wild West for far too long,” said US Transportation Secretary Sean P. Duffy. “We’ve brought back common-sense rules of the road, including requiring English language proficiency and valid working documents for foreign drivers. When state leaders failed to keep Americans on the road safe, we stepped in and held them accountable, and we’re just getting started.”
Secretary Duffy has issued a wide variety of reforms, including new guidance to enforce English proficiency standards among drivers and rules to ensure all testing is conducted in English.
States including California have been fined millions of dollars for non-compliance with English-proficiency standards.
After being hit with close to $200 million in fines and withheld federal money, California officially began enforcing English-language standards.
New York was hit with a $73 million fine in April for failing to revoke fraudulently issued CDLs to non-domiciled drivers.
President Trump’s Executive Order and subsequent enforcement by the Department of Transportation came after a wave of high-profile incidents, including multiple fatalities, involving foreign truckers who should not have been on America’s roads.
