President Trump signed an Executive Order on Friday expanding US sanctions against Cuba.
Two White House officials who spoke to Reuters said the sanctions target “people, entities and affiliates that support the Cuban government’s security apparatus or are complicit in corruption or serious human rights violations, as well as agents, officials or supporters of the government.”
The order also authorizes secondary sanctions “for conducting or facilitating transactions with those targeted under the order.”
Cuba’s President, Miguel Diaz-Canel, said the new sanctions were part of a “brutal, genocidal” blockade against his country.
“The blockade and its reinforcement cause so much harm because of the intimidating and arrogant behavior of the world’s greatest military power,” he wrote on X.
The country’s foreign minister said the measures were “collective punishment.”
According to one expert, the sanctions are the most significant measures for non-American companies since the embargo began decades ago.
They will mean that companies “that have carefully segregated their Cuba operations from the United States are no longer protected.”
Since the raid in early January that deposed Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro, President Trump has insisted “Cuba is next” on multiple occasions.
On Friday, at an event in Palm Beach, President Trump said—apparently in jest—that the US will “be taking [Cuba] over almost immediately.”
“On the way back from Iran, we’ll have maybe the USS Abraham Lincoln aircraft carrier—the biggest in the world—come in, stop about 100 years offshore and they’ll say, ‘Thank you very much. We’ll give up!’”
By deposing Maduro, the US has placed even greater pressure on Cuba’s economy and infrastructure, denying it vital oil supplies and plunging the country into nationwide blackouts.

He’s worried about Cuba and Greenland and Ukraine and Iran and literally everything but America.
The only conclusion one can draw is that he really hates Americans and that this is all a big joke to him as he plays Emperor.
