Chaos unfolded in Tennessee as a Democrat state senator jumped on her desk and sang a protest song in response to a Republican redistricting measure intended to turn blue Memphis into Republican-leaning districts.

The incident happened Thursday during a Tennessee General Assembly session, where the Republican-dominated legislature voted to split Memphis between three districts designed to become Republican controlled.

Footage showed Republicans holding a vote on the measure, as State Sen. Charlane Oliver (D-Nashville) disrupted the session by jumping on her desk, singing protest songs, and holding up a cloth banner reading “NO JIM CROW 2.0 Stop the TN Steal.”

Sen. Oliver was later seen struggling with the sergeant at arms who was trying to take the banner from her, as she refused to give it up.

Video also showed Democrat State Rep. Justin Pearson angrily confronting state troopers following the vote as he was ushered out, yelling, “MOVE THE F*CK BACK! BOY!! The f*ck is wrong wichu?! You stupid motherf*cker!”

Pearson’s violent outburst prompted Tennessee Rep. Tim Burchett (R) to call for his arrest, writing, “He needs to go to jail,” on X.

Other footage showed state troopers arresting unruly protesters in the gallery.

Here’s more footage of the chaos at Thursday’s hearing:

Thursday’s vote followed last month’s US Supreme Court ruling on the Voting Rights Act, which raised the threshold to prove racial discrimination when redrawing congressional maps.

In the end, the protests proved fruitless as the redistricting measure passed along party lines with a vote of 64-25 in the House, and 25-5 in the Senate – with Gov. Bill Lee (R) signing the bill into law later that day.
