A leftist Washington city councilwoman recanted her statements after being criticized for denigrating the American flag, saying she preferred the gay pride flag.
The criticism stemmed from comments made Monday by Lynnwood councilwoman Isabel Mata, who identifies as queer and neurodivergent.
“To me, a pride flag is way more relatable than an American flag,” Mata said at a recent meeting, referring to 27 different iterations of the U.S. flag displayed at Wilcox Park.
“I would not raise an American flag at my house because I wouldn’t. I wasn’t even born here,” she continued, adding, “But I would raise a pride flag.”
“And as the most diverse city in all of Snohomish County, I don’t think that I’m the only one who would maybe choose to have 27 other flags,” she added.
Mata’s comments set off a firestorm of criticism, with many blasting her on social media.

She took an oath to the U.S. Constitution to hold her seat. She represents naturalized citizens and veterans who chose that flag and bled for it. Calling it "unrelatable" while serving under its authority is the part that doesn't hold. The fact she still holds office is insane…

Mata appeared to back off her sentiments in a recent interview with Fox News, saying she believed the flag display could be more diverse and that she didn’t agree with some of the periods of time some of the flags portrayed.
“This community is filled with so many beautiful cultures and diverse backgrounds and all of these things, yet we have 27 iterations of the same flag, some representing parts of American history that, frankly, are not great,” Mata told Fox News Digital, adding that the comments were her’s “personally, as a queer woman, about what the pride flag means to me.”
She also acknowledged the sacrifices made in honor of the US flag, saying, “I apologize for the way I expressed myself, and I mean that sincerely. The American flag represents the sacrifices of veterans and military families, and the promise that drew immigrants like me to this country…I should have honored that more carefully in my remarks, and I did not. I have deep respect for everyone who has served under that flag.”
“I believe there is room, in a city as diverse as Lynnwood, to celebrate the many cultures, identities, and communities that make it great, alongside the American flag, not instead of it. Any formal changes to public spaces would go through a proper public process with full community input. That is how it should work,” she added.
Let this be a lesson to other immigrants serving on city councils not to tread on Old Glory.

I’ll say it again we need to make an amendment only US born citizens can run for any political office
Neurodivergent?
Do you mean ADHD?
Individuals who identify as neurodivergent frequently report worse depression, anxiety, and quality of life scores .
I think she just has fagophilia.
