Billboard Puts Would-be Criminals on Notice: ‘Welcome to Mississippi. Firing Squad is Legal. Think Twice’

A new billboard in Mississippi advises potential criminals to “think twice” due to the state’s capital punishment laws, which include death by firing squad.

The billboard informs motorists driving into the Magnolia State, “Welcome to Mississippi, WHERE THE FIRING SQUAD IS LEGAL. THINK TWICE.”

The roadside sign sponsored by the DeSoto County district attorney’s office can be spotted on Interstate 55 entering Mississippi from Memphis, Tennessee.

DeSoto County DA Matthew Barton, the county’s first-ever Republican and youngest DA, says the hostile greeting is intended to prevent out-of-state criminals from committing violent crimes while visiting the state.

“We are going to be loud and clear that DeSoto County does not coddle violent criminals. If you bring violence across our state line, we are going to prosecute you aggressively and hold you accountable,” Barton said, according to WREG. “People on death row are the losers of life’s lottery…If violent criminals are looking for a state that coddles crime, Mississippi is not it. They’d better think twice before they act here.”

“Safety is achieved through enforcement,” Barton added. “Safe communities do not happen by accident. They happen because law enforcement officers, prosecutors, judges, and citizens refuse to surrender their communities to violent criminals.”

Barton’s latest billboard comes on the heels of another viral campaign, which advised: “Memphis Criminals: Turn Back Now! Prison Awaits You In DeSoto County.”

DeSoto county residents spoken to by WREG were largely receptive to the DA’s latest assertive anti-crime bulletin, with at least one woman disagreeing with the sign’s message.

“I think that’s a good thing to do,” explained Larry Games from Lake Cormorant. “Want to make sure they don’t come down here if they’re intent on doing bad things. They don’t need to come down here.”

A Hernando resident strongly disapproves of the DA’s billboard message.

“I think it’s a reversion to barbarism and away from the rule of law,” the resident explained. “I think it’s a terrible message to send. I thought we were a democracy and it doesn’t seem like we’re any of that any more.”

At the Mississippi Welcome Center south of Hernando, a few out-of-state motorists shared their thoughts on the billboard.

“I think it’s a good idea to deter crime, I really do,” said Jesse Barr from Bordelonville, Louisiana. “I think somebody reads that and they might think ‘I could be shot in a firing squad…so I may not want to commit a crime.’”

“You better think twice. We’re from Chicago, so I think a lot of people in Chicago would probably appreciate that message right now,” shared Kevin and Sandy McCue.

The Mississippi legislature approved the archaic execution method in 2017, joining Oklahoma, South Carolina, Idaho and Utah in allowing death by firing squad.
