A German mother and father in Northern Spain will spend several years in prison after keeping their three children locked up in a “house of horrors” claiming they lived in fear of the Covid-19 virus.
The couple, German freelance tech recruiter Christian Steffen, 54, and his American-born German wife Melissa Ann Steffen, 49, who emigrated to Spain from Germany in 2021, were arrested in April 2025 after it was discovered they kept their 10-year-old son and two 8-year-old twin boys in quarantine lockdown in a rented home near the outskirts of Oviedo.
The husband and wife, charged with domestic violence with habitual psychological abuse, child abandonment, and illegal detention, were sentenced to two years and 10 months, but were acquitted of the illegal detention charges.
The parents are also barred from communicating with the children or exercising their parental rights over the next three and a half years, and will also compensate the children to the tune of 30,000 each.
Prosecutors accused the parents of keeping the children locked indoors for four years, depriving them of an education, clean living conditions, proper medical care, and normal human interaction.
Embed from Getty Images“They never went outside, not even to the garden of their home, for almost four years because of the unfounded fear the accused had, and they had instilled in their children, that they might be infected with something,” the prosecutor argued, according to Sur In English.
“The accused never enrolled their children in school in Spain and learned by themselves or with the help of their parents, with the result that the younger children, aged eight when they were found, didn’t know how to read or write.
“Furthermore, the children did not receive any health monitoring: the last time they saw a doctor was in 2019, and it was the defendants who were responsible for diagnosing and treating their problems when they arose.”
The discovery of the children in the home came after a neighbor reported they could hear children’s voices and screams coming from the home, but never saw any children.
Upon surveilling the home, police saw piles of garbage at the bottom of the stairs they said appeared “as if they were being thrown down from the upper floor and never taken outside.”

The children were also sleeping in cribs they were too big for, while prosecutors described them as having bladder and bowel control issues due to the prolonged use of diapers.
“The children walked hunched over, with bowed legs, had difficulty going up and down stairs, and had irritated skin and onychomycosis,” the prosecutor said.
“One of them had a slight stoop. When they went outside, once their situation had been discovered, the children were surprised by their surroundings.”
Once they left the home, the children were reportedly bewildered by the outside world, with police reporting, “They were touching the grass, breathing as if they had never done so before in their lives, they saw a snail and were completely fascinated,” according to El Pais.
Inside the juvenile detention facility the children were described as being “fascinated by television,” and are receiving psychological treatment.
The parents’ defense team argued the parents did not lock up the children out of malice but an “unsurmountable fear” of the Covid virus.
