Texas high school student Marco Hunter-Lopez is going viral this week for boldly standing up to Democrat Congressman Jamie Raskin (Md.) during a meeting titled, “Why Political Islam & Sharia Law are Incompatible with the U.S. Constitution.”

The 16-year-old student has become an activist at his school, opposing a group called “Why Islam” being allowed to hand out Qurans, hijabs, and Sharia pamphlets during lunch while Christian conservatives are reportedly prevented from spreading their beliefs on campus.

When Hunter-Lopez said, “I think it’s important to point out—I believe it was 56 of the 57 Declaration of Independence signers were Bible-believing, church-attending Christians,” Rep. Raskin interjected by noting the U.S. Constitution enforces the separation of church and state.

The congressman also pointed out the Constitution doesn’t mention “God,” but the teenager responded that the Declaration of Independence mentions “God” four times.

Raskin noted the Declaration isn’t “law” and that “Thomas Jefferson was denounced as an ‘infidel’ because he didn’t believe in the establishment of religion, and he and [James] Madison were emphatic about separating church and state.”

“That’s the whole glory of our constitutional design in our history—that they rebelled against centuries of religious warfare between the Catholics and the Protestants and witchcraft trials, and inquisition, Holy Crusades. America proclaimed the separation of church and state,” Raskin added.

Hunter-Lopez clarified he wasn’t suggesting the state officially approve or endorse Christianity, but rather that elected officials “acknowledge our Christian heritage in America.”

Speaking in a very condescending tone, Raskin asked, “Oh, you don’t think that you’re allowed to acknowledge your Christian heritage, or your Jewish heritage, or your Muslim heritage?”

The young man was praised online for calling out Raskin’s BS despite being 47 years younger.
