The Trump administration wants a “summer surge” of National Guard troops in Washington DC ahead of the 250th anniversary of the nation’s founding.

US Marshals Service Director Gadyaces ‌Serralta requested the extra National Guard troops in anticipation of massively increased numbers of tourists in the city for the celebrations, centered around the Fourth of July.

“They will continue to provide presence for high visibility and support across the district, so law enforcement can focus on their duties,” Serralta said at a press conference.

“High visibility presence reduces response times to crime, provides support to law enforcement on scene and keeps officers and civilians safe.”

An extra 1,500 troops have been requested, which would bring the total in the city to 5,000.

The surge would also include “more U.S. park police on foot in vehicles and on horseback through D.C.,” as well as resources from the FBI, US Marshals and other agencies, Serralta said.

President Trump has made law and order one of his flagship policies for his second term, sending federal agents and the National Guard in a series of “surges” to cities including Washington DC, Chicago, Portland, Oregon, Memphis and Los Angeles.

Washington DC was the first target of President Trump’s national crime crackdown, “to rescue our nation’s capital from crime, bloodshed, bedlam, and squalor, and worse.”

“We’re formally declaring a public safety emergency. This is an emergency. This is a tragic emergency, and it’s embarrassing,” Trump said.

“This city will no longer be a sanctuary for illegal alien criminals.

“We will have full, seamless, integrated cooperation at all levels of law enforcement, and we’ll deploy officers across the district with an overwhelming presence.”

In Washington DC, there were over 2,100 arrests in the first 30 days, and thousands more in the weeks that followed.

A “Make DC Safe and Beautiful” task force focused on clearing homeless encampments, targeting violent offenders and seizing guns and drugs.

The Metropolitan Police Department, DC National Guard, federal agents including FBI, and National Guard from other states took part in the surge in the capital.

The Pentagon plans to maintain the National Guard presence in Washington until the end of President Trump’s term, in 2029.
