An Afghan migrant who admitted to stabbing to death an unsuspecting London man walking his dog pled guilty to manslaughter after his lawyers argued he had diminished responsibility for the killing due to his severe mental state.
The incident in question unfolded in October 27, 2025, with footage captured by a bystander showing 28-year-old Afghan “refugee” Dawood Safi suddenly lunging at resident Wayne Broadhurst, 49, with a knife in the West London suburb of Uxbridge, before stabbing him repeatedly in the neck, chest and side.
On Monday, Safi pled guilty to manslaughter “on the grounds of diminished responsibility due to his psychotic state,” according to the BBC.
Jurors learned Safi had flung into an unhinged rage before the killing, unexpectedly stabbing his unarmed landlord and attacking the landlord’s teenage son before turning his attention to Broadhurst, a street sweeper and Liverpool FC who had the “terrible misfortune” of walking his dog near an alley in the area.
“These two charges of attempted murder are but the first and the earlier part of the shocking and terrible events that would unfold on a quiet residential street,” prosecutor Jonathan Laidlaw told the court.
“Those events would end with an entirely unprovoked, ferocious and senseless killing of a man called Wayne Broadhurst as he was doing no more than walking his dog in that street.”
The prosecutor said Broadhurst “For no apparent reason, rational or otherwise… was stabbed to death in a frenzied, random and entirely unprovoked attack.”
“As I’ve said to you, Mr Broadhurst died in the street, with the dog by his side,” he added.
During the trial, an eyewitness described Safi as appearing “like he was possessed” following the first attack.
“The defendant was hearing voices, he’d become consumed by paranoia and delusional beliefs, which included that people generally and members of his family in this country were both controlling him and plotting against him,” said Laidlaw.
An expert said Safi was experiencing a depressive psychosis, resulting in an “abnormality of mental functioning.”
The migrant, who entered the UK in 2020 and was granted asylum in 2022, remains on trial for attempted murder of the 45-year-old landlord and his 15-year-old boy.
The court additionally heard Safi’s original reasons for seeking asylum, claiming he lived in fear of the Taliban who killed his father, were false, with Laidlaw saying, “None of that was true.”
