A grand jury in Montgomery County, Texas, indicted a man this week accusing him of secretly administering an abortion medication to a pregnant woman that led to the death of her unborn baby.

Jon Reuben Demeter, 25, now faces upgraded charges relating to the Feb. 20 incident, where a woman who gave birth to a stillborn baby alleged he’d given her abortion-inducing medication without her knowledge.

The indictment claimed Demeter ordered an abortion drug online and added it to an electrolyte drink mix, convincing the woman to consume it by falsely telling her it would aid her pregnancy.

The woman became ill and was hospitalized, where she gave birth to a stillborn girl, Presley Mae, at 14 weeks.

The woman told investigators she had planned to carry the baby to term, but that Demeter did not want the child, saying she had at one point turned down his offer of $1,000 to have an abortion and that he’d previously mentioned being able to obtain abortion pills online.

Click2Houston.com reports: “While searching Demeter’s home, investigators found a glass bowl containing white powder residue and evidence of a crushed white pill.”

Speaking at a press conference Wednesday, Sheriff Wesley Doolittle alleged, “He covertly crushed that medication and mixed it in a water bottle with a liquid I.V. packet, and this was done with this specific intent to cause the death of the child.”

Following the investigation, Demeter is now being charged with injury to a child and performing an abortion, both first-degree felonies, upgraded from his previous aggravated assault with a deadly weapon second-degree felony charge.

“We believe that this may be the first use of the statute under these circumstances in the state of Texas,” District Attorney Mike Holley stated, adding, “We believe this is the lawful and appropriate charge for this conduct.”

“This case represents allegations of deliberate deception that resulted in devastating consequences,” Holley added in a press release.

Commenting during the press conference on recent changes in Texas laws regarding abortions, Holley remarked, “I would like to say though that although the legality of abortion has changed even within my lifetime in this country, it has never been lawful for someone to perform an abortion in the manner against a woman and against her consent, of this nature. That has never been the law. It has always been illegal.”

Demeter’s felonies each carry potential sentences of 5 years to life in prison, and no date has been set for his trial.
