A harrowing scene unfolded outside the White House on Saturday as Secret Service agents confronted a gunman who opened fire near a security gate, killing him.

“Shortly after 6 p.m Saturday an individual in the area of 17th street and Pennsylvania Avenue pulled a weapon from his bag and began firing,” a Secret Service spokesman said in a statement.

“Secret Service Police returned fire striking the suspect who was transported to an area hospital where he was pronounced deceased. During the shooting one bystander was also struck by gunfire.”

“No injuries were sustained by officers. The President was in the White House during the incident, however no protectees or operations were impacted,” they added.

The Secret Service also noted that it was “unclear whether the bystander was struck by the suspect’s initial gunfire or during the subsequent exchange of gunfire,” according to MS NOW.

The shooting prompted the White House to temporarily go into lockdown, as agents ordered reporters gathered at the north lawn to shelter in the briefing room.

A correspondent for ABC News was filming a report for social media and ducked for cover the moment shots rang out.

Other reporters also took cover during the incident.

The bystander shot, described as a young male, was transported to the hospital and is reportedly undergoing surgery.

FBI Director Kash Patel reported the FBI was on the scene investigating the situation.

An update from White House Communications Director Steven Cheung noted Trump was still working at 8 PM ET after the shooting happened.

CNN reported the Secret Service and DC Metro PD were familiar with the shooter, whom they described as “possibly an emotionally disturbed person,” and that he’d previously been encountered at different White House access points and may have been subject to a restraining order.

The New York Post identified the man as 21-year-old Nasire Best, noting he “believed he was Jesus Christ,” and used a revolver during the incident.

Saturday’s incident marks the second time shots have been fired in close proximity to the president in as many months, following last month’s shooting at the White House Correspondent’s Association Dinner.
