A man was arrested in Switzerland on Thursday after stabbing three people at a train station and shouting “Allahu Akbar,” in what Swiss authorities are labeling a terror attack.
The incident unfolded at the Winterthur railway station in Zurich, with witnesses describing how 31-year-old Turkish-Swiss national Nesip Dedeler randomly attacked three men, ages 28, 43 and 52, during the early morning commute.
Footage showed Dedeler, who was naturalized in 2009 and released from a psych ward in the days leading up to the attack, running down the sidewalk near the station while shouting “Allahu Akbar,” an Arabic phrase meaning “God is great.”
“I heard a man scream ‘Allahu akbar’ five or six times, in a very agitated manner,” one witness told Swiss media outlet Blick.
A taxi driver also described seeing Dedeler “rush off the ramp and try to stab a man.”
Zurich Head of the Department of Security Mario Fehr asserted, “I am exceptionally calling this a terrorist attack,” with Zurich police commander Marius Weyermann agreeing “that the motive for this act must be sought in the realm of radicalization and extremism.”
Reports state the 52-year-old man stabbed during the attack suffered serious injuries to his leg and underwent emergency surgery. The other two victims also sustained separate leg and neck stab wounds but have since been released from the hospital.

Dedeler had been committed to a psych ward earlier this week after showing up to the Winterthur police station on Monday making confused statements, but he was allowed to leave Wednesday after an assessment claimed he posed no danger.
“Why that decision was made is beyond our knowledge, but the assessment was obviously wrong,” Weyermann said criticizing the release.
Dedeler had also been reported to police in 2015 for spreading ISIS propaganda and had known ties to a radical mosque in the area.
