Democrat congressional candidate Adam Hamawy won the party’s primary for New Jersey’s 12th district on Tuesday.
Hamawy has a controversial past and interesting background, serving in the U.S. military as an Army medic, allegedly saving Illinois Sen. Tammy Duckworth’s (D) life after her Blackhawk helicopter was shot down in Iraq in 2004, working as a first responder in the aftermath of the 9/11 attacks and testifying in defense of convicted Islamic terrorist Sheikh Omar Abdel-Rahman in the 1990s.
Abdel-Rahman, also known as the “Blind Sheikh,” was convicted in 1995 of seditious conspiracy, plotting to wage a “war of urban terrorism” against the United States by force, aiming to change U.S. policies toward Egypt and Israel, solicitation to murder Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak, conspiracy to murder Mubarak, solicitation to attack U.S. military installations and conspiracy to conduct bombings.
In 1996, the Blind Sheikh was sentenced to life plus 15 years, spending the entire sentence in solitary confinement without parole.
Previously Abdel-Rahman was linked to the perpetrators of the 1993 World Trade Center bombing that killed 6 people and injured over 1,000.
Several individuals who plotted and carried out the WTC bombing attended the sheikh’s New York City mosques and followed his sermons and fatwas that promoted jihadist activity against alleged enemies of Islam such as the U.S. and Egypt.
The Abdel-Rahman-led jihadists also organized a “Day of Terror” in 1993 intended to attack the UN headquarters, Lincoln and Holland Tunnels, George Washington Bridge, FBI headquarters in Manhattan, and other major landmarks, but the scheme was thwarted when the sheikh and others were arrested just before they were able to carry out the plot.
The sheikh was held in federal custody until his 1995 seditious conspiracy trial in the Southern District of New York where Hamawy – then a 26-year-old medical student – detailed his relationship with the mosque leader.
Hamawy and Abdel-Rahman met in 1991 and continued their close relationship even after the 1993 WTC bombing, according to Politico.
Emad Salem, the government’s key informant in the case against the sheikh, claimed the Islamic terrorist tried convincing him to assassinate Mubarak, however, Hamawy testified that no such comment was made during a 1991 road trip to Detroit.
While being cross-examined by prosecutor Patrick Fitzgerald, Hamawy also denied hearing Abdel-Rahman “urge attacks on U.S. military bases, bank robberies, or jihad specifically against America (though he acknowledged criticism of U.S. foreign policy, e.g., support for Israel, Gulf War, inaction in Bosnia).”
The Blind Sheikh died in prison in 2017.
Right Line News Chief Content Officer Eric Daugherty said Hamawy’s nomination shows “The Democrats are becoming the party of ISLAMIC TERROR,” adding, “He is a national security risk.”
According to podcast host Mario Nawfal, Hamawy claims all the negative publicity over his defense of terrorists is just “right-wing, MAGA smears.”
Several other prominent figures and political commentators also expressed fear that the Egyptian-born Democrat is a “national security” threat.
