An illegal alien from Africa with a decades-long criminal history that includes a conviction for attempted murder was finally apprehended by Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) in Tennessee.

The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) just released details on the arrest of Gabriel Maror Ayuel in Nashville on May 4.

Ayuel, 55, entered the U.S. as a refugee from Sudan in 1995.

In 2003, he was convicted of attempted murder and sentenced to 20 years in prison in Davidson County, Tennessee, although it is unclear how much of that sentence he served before being released.

In 2008, a federal immigration judge issued a final order of removal for Ayuel, but he failed to leave the country.

After months of investigation, ICE Enforcement and Removal Operations (ERO) New Orleans located Ayuel in an apartment in South Nashville and took him into custody on May 4.

Ayuel also has prior arrests for driving under the influence and failure to appear in Georgia, as well as aggravated assault with a deadly weapon, felony possession of a prohibited weapon, and felony flight to avoid prosecution in Tennessee.

He remains in ICE custody pending removal proceedings.

“Removing illegal aliens with serious criminal convictions from our communities is essential to protecting public safety,” said ERO New Orleans acting Field Office Director Brian Acuna.

“We are committed to enforcing immigration laws and prioritizing cases that pose a threat to our neighborhoods.”
