New York Democrats have passed legislation that removes traditional gendered terms like “mother” and “father” from key sections of state law, specifically regarding child custody, parental rights, domestic relations, and related proceedings.
The bill passed in the state assembly and senate, now only needing Democrat Governor Kathy Hochul’s signature to become finalized.
“Paternity” will also be replaced with “parentage” and “putative father” with “alleged parent,” applying during family court proceedings, child support determinations, custody cases, education statutes, and other areas involving parental rights.
The bill was sponsored by Sen. Luis Sepulveda (D-Bronx), who chairs the Senate Judiciary Committee, and Assemblywoman Amy Paulin (D-Westchester).
The gender terminology updates are part of the left’s ongoing war on language meant to kowtow to the radical LGBT movement.
The measure has drawn sharp backlash from conservatives who call it ideological overreach and argue it’s an unnecessary distraction that erases biological reality and the cultural significance of motherhood and fatherhood in favor of clinical, gender-neutral phrasing.
- State Conservative Party Chairman Gerard Kassar described it as “woke culture run amok” and “one-upmanship,” arguing lawmakers are wasting time on symbolic changes while the state budget was delayed and pressing issues like taxes, schools, and public safety go unaddressed.
- Republican gubernatorial candidate Bruce Blakeman called it part of a “war on families” and vowed to protect “Mom and Dad” if elected.
- Sen. Patricia Canzoneri-Fitzpatrick (R-Nassau) emphasized that New Yorkers want focus on real problems: “I am a mother and proud to be called ‘mother.’”
- Rep. Claudia Tenney (R-NY) stated that mothers are “the foundation of families and society” and not a “political construct.”
Even some Democrats admitted the bill was unnecessary, with one left-wing lawmaker telling the New York Post, “I have a word we can use for this, ‘unnecessary.’”
Governor Hochul has until the end of the year to sign the bill, but has not made a public statement in support of the legislation.
Other Democrat-led states such as Wisconsin passed similar laws requiring gender-neutral terms in statutes and allowing a non-binary “X” marker on birth certificates.
There doesn’t seem to be an end in sight for the debate over gender and biological language used in government-affiliated proceedings or documents.
