The body of an elderly woman whose throat was slashed was found near a pond in southern France on Thursday evening, according to reports.
The gruesome discovery was made at around 7:30 p.m. in Le Grau-du-Roi, a commune on the Mediterranean Sea in the department of Gard.
Authorities say the 86-year-old victim was out for a walk when she was “violently assaulted” by a male attacker in the vicinity of a campsite near the beach of L’Espiguette, Le Parisien reports.
The suspect remains on the loose, according to the latest available updates.
“The Gard Gendarmerie’s investigative unit and the Vauvert Gendarmerie Company have been tasked with conducting the murder investigation, under the direction of the Nîmes District Attorney’s Office,” the prosecutor stated.
