From CNN to the BBC, liberal mainstream media outlets have poked holes in Democrat California Governor Gavin Newsom’s claim that he’s being politically attacked by the Trump administration via DOJ investigations into him and his wife.
Explaining this week that Newsom’s wife Jennifer is “under federal investigation for potential tax crimes,” CNN cited sources who say the governor himself is not under investigation.
“The current investigation was launched last year by the U.S. Attorney’s Office in Sacramento based on a whistleblower report,” the outlet added.
Nevertheless, Gavin has framed the probe as a politically motivated attack against his family because Republicans see him as a threat due to a potential 2028 presidential run.

Newsom’s wife also portrayed the investigation as a political witch-hunt, saying, “There are clearly no boundaries to what Donald Trump will do to get his way or to challenge those who get in his way. This is not presidential behavior, and the Governor and I will continue to speak truth to power because the American people deserve so much more.”
One CNN source said the probe “was launched by the department’s Trump-appointed leadership in DC.”
Another source told the BBC that there were “several investigations ongoing” for “roughly a year”, denying involvement by President Trump and saying the probes “all originated out of California, working through whistleblowers and government sources.”
The outlet explained, “Federal prosecutors in the state capital of Sacramento were handling the investigations, one of which pertained to Newsom’s wife’s taxes, and another related to Newsom’s former chief of staff, the individual said. The source did not specify which chief of staff, and Newsom did not say which current or former aides were under scrutiny.”
The irony of the Newsoms crying political persecution is glaring as the Biden administration repeatedly tried to imprison President Trump, from the 2023 Manhattan DA Alvin Bragg hush money case that had POTUS indicted on 34 felony counts to the Fulton County, Georgia, DA Fani Willis case that same year where a special purpose grand jury indicted Trump for alleged election interference.
Additionally, Special Counsel Jack Smith launched a pair of federal cases against President Trump related to classified documents at Mar-a-Lago in Florida and alleged conspiracy to defraud or obstruct the 2020 election with the January 6th debacle.
The Georgia case and both Jack Smith cases were ultimately dismissed with the president only being convicted in the Bragg case, which led to Judge Juan Merchan imposing an unconditional discharge on all counts and left Trump a convicted felon while avoiding jail time, fines, probation, and other penalties.
Time will tell if the investigations lead to any indictments of the California governor, his wife or former chief of staff.

Oh, no wonder he was worried. It isn’t Trump’s DOJ which means something might actually happen. Although, given the number of liberal judges in the courts, he still probably doesn’t have much to be afraid of.
