An illegal alien has been given a de facto life sentence in prison for murdering a woman in Kansas more than two decades ago.

In 2005, authorities reportedly found 30-year-old Maria Morfin-Rojas stabbed to death inside her apartment in Lenexa, Kansas, after she missed several shifts at work and her co-workers became concerned.

Her killer, Angel Maria Herrera, had already stolen her car and fled south into Mexico by the time an investigation was launched.

Herrera eventually made his way back to his home country of El Salvador where he was eventually arrested in 2023.

Herrera was then extradited to the U.S. to face justice in 2024.

Homeland Security Investigations (HSI) Kansas City facilitated travel to the U.S. for two witnesses who testified against Herrera.

“Their testimony led to Herrera’s conviction for premeditated first-degree murder and aggravated burglary,” HSI stated.

On March 27, Herrera — who is now 43 years old — was sentenced to 50 years in prison without parole, known in Kansas as a “Hard 50.”

“Justice transcends time and distance. I’m extremely proud of our agents for working with multiple partner agencies to bring these two key witnesses to the United States to provide crucial testimony,” stated HSI Kansas City Special Agent in Charge Rick Sabatini.

“While we can’t bring the victim back, we can bring closure to her friends and family, and reassurance to the public that HSI never gives up in our efforts to hold criminals accountable to the fullest extent of the law.”
