Vice President JD Vance arrived in Switzerland this morning ahead of crunch talks with Iranian officials.
Negotiations between US and Iranian representatives this week have nearly been derailed multiple times by ongoing tensions over the Strait of Hormuz and Israel’s war against Hezbollah in Lebanon.
VP Vance joins special envoy Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner, President Trump’s son-in-law, for the talks.
Mediation will be provided by Pakistani Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and officials from Qatar.
“I’m looking forward to starting the technical talks with the Iranians, the Pakistanis, and the Qataris… We’re going to hopefully make progress on the nuclear issue, make progress on the Lebanon ceasefire issue: Those are the two big things that I think we’re going to be focused on,” Vance said before boarding Air Force Two at Joint Base Andrews Saturday.
The Vice President expressed optimism that progress would be made regarding Iran’s nuclear ambitions and a ceasefire between Israel and Hezbollah.
A memorandum of understanding to begin formal peace negotiations was signed this week and included a provision for Israel to halt military operations in southern Lebanon.
But less than a day after a ceasefire was announced between Israel and Hezbollah, Israeli forces launched attacks that killed 16 people, putting the Switzerland summit in jeopardy.
Vance was originally due to fly to Switzerland on Friday, but Iran cancelled the talks.
President Trump has imposed a 60-day deadline for a deal and warned that if one is not reached, the US will charge tolls on traffic through the Strait of Hormuz for “services rendered as the Guardian Angel to the countries of the Middle East.”
According to US Central Command, the Strait of Hormuz is now open and traffic “continues to flow.”
Fifty-five merchant ships are reported to have transited the Strait on Saturday, carrying 17 million barrels of oil.

The zionists hate that Vance is part of this. Before Vance, they had a lock on sabotaging negotiations with their allies WItkoff and Kushner.
Rubio hides, does not do his job. Maybe it is too risky for his presidential ambitions to be caught in the Iran war. Rubio is a ZERO.
Trump is not credible, Kushner absolutely should not be involved in this at all.
