Israel and Lebanon have signed a new peace framework, with the aim of bringing hostilities between Israel and Hezbollah to an end after months of fighting.

“We are happy to announce a framework agreement between the sovereign government of Lebanon and of the government of Israel, with the mediation and support of the United States of America, that begins to put in place a framework for lasting peace and security,” US Secretary of State Marco Rubio said at the signing ceremony in Washington DC.

“And that’s what these two nations deserve.”

Israel and Hezbollah resumed fighting soon after the beginning of the Iran war, at the end of February this year.

Israeli forces have captured territory in southern Lebanon, including territory north of the Litani river, and launched airstrikes on targets across the country.

Peace between Israel and Hezbollah has become a key condition for peace between the US and Iran since a ceasefire was announced on 7 April.

A separate ceasefire was announced between Israel and Hezbollah nine days later, but tit-for-tat attacks have continued ever since.

Although the new peace framework agreed by the US and Iran on 17 June called for an end to hostilities between Israel and Hezbollah, fighting erupted again after Hezbollah killed four Israeli soldiers.

Israel responded with dozens of airstrikes across southern Lebanon, before a truce was declared.

The new peace framework was signed by Lebanese Ambassador Nada Moawad and Israeli Ambassador Yechiel Leiter on Friday.

“The trilateral framework we signed today is a first step on the road to restoring Lebanese sovereignty and territorial integrity, securing a permanent and final cessation of hostilities, enabling our people to go back to their land, and allowing ‌all Lebanese to live in peace, security, and prosperity,” Moawad said.

According to Leiter, “In this performance-based trilateral framework agreement, Iran is out, Hezbollah is out, and the road to peace between Israel ‌and Lebanon is in.”

The agreement has already been denounced by figures associated with Hezbollah in Lebanon.

Lebanese member of parliament Hassan Fadlallah said, “The authorities will not be able to enforce the agreement signed in Washington unless they resort to civil war with U.S. backing.

“We will confront any measure taken by the authorities and will remain more committed than ever to our resistance and our weapons.”
