Cuba Plunges into Darkness for Second Time in a Week

Cuba’s national grid collapsed for the second time this week, plunging the island nation into darkness.

“We are already working on restoring the National Electric Power System, a complex ‌situation amid all the difficulties we face on a daily basis,” Energy Minister Vicente de la O Levy wrote on social media.

An outage cut off power to the island’s ten million residents on Monday, and parts of the island were still without power when the second blackout happened.

The country has struggled to keep the lights on thanks to an ongoing oil blockade by the US, which many believe could be a prelude to a regime-change operation to remove the communist leadership.

At the end of June, President Trump suggested that could happen at any time.

Asked if an operation against Cuba could resemble the raid that captured Nicolas Maduro at the beginning of January, Trump told Axios, “Possibly. It’s possible.”

“Operation Absolute Resolve” used special forces to breach Maduro’s compound in Caracas. The president and his wife were captured and brought back to the US.

President Trump said Secretary of State Marco Rubio is involved in the Cuba policy.

“Marco’s doing a great job,” Trump said.

“Marco’s parents—it’s such a great story—his parents were from Cuba.”

President Trump went on to discuss the Venezuela operation in some detail, saying it was less complex than the campaign against Iran, and that distance is an important factor in what happens with regard to Cuba.

“These places are close by. Whereas if you look at Iran, that’s a very long trip,” Trump said.

“I flew to that area a few times and unrelated to this, but you’re flying for 18 hours, you’re flying for a long time. Venezuela is relatively close, and Cuba is a hopscotch.”

President Trump added that a crucial difference between Venezuela and Cuba is oil—or Cuba’s lack of it.

“Cuba has nice property, and a nice shoreline.”

After Operation Absolute Resolve, which saw a pro-US leadership installed in Venezuela, shipments of oil to Cuba were restricted, plunging the island into an energy crisis that has seen widespread blackouts.

The Trump administration has also expanded sanctions against the regime and indicted former president Raul Castro on murder charges.

As well as a potential military operation, President Trump has suggested a “friendly takeover” of Cuba, with Secretary of State Marco Rubio playing an important role.
