Iran appears to be rebuilding its nuclear facilities, according to newly released satellite images.
Footage of two nuclear facilities at Pickaxe Mountain and Parchin shows “major signs” of activity.
As The New York Post notes, such construction-work almost certainly “runs afoul” of the Memorandum of Understanding signed between the US and Iran last month, to begin negotiations for lasting peace.
The memorandum states that Iran will “maintain the current status quo of its nuclear program,” which would prevent construction or reconstruction.
This week, President Trump declared the ceasefire between the US and Iran to be “over” after Iranian attacks on shipping in the Strait of Hormuz.
Both nuclear sites were repeatedly targeted by US and Israeli forces during the war, which began on 28 February.
The facility at Parchin shows “significant, new attempted reconstruction activity,” wrote David Albright, founder of the Institute for Science and International Security.
“While imagery from early June indicates damage assessment and clean-up, including the removal of debris and temporary covering of the three impact holes of the buried facility, the newer imagery shows renewed activity at the impact holes for more permanent sealing as well as additional concrete hardening of the site.”
Other images show vehicles travelling into and out of the Pickaxe Mountain facility, which is suspected of being used for uranium enrichment.
So far, there appears to have been little activity at Iran’s three most important nuclear sites—Natanz, Fordau and Isfahan.
On Saturday, Iran’s new Supreme Leader, Mojtaba Khamenei, promised that revenge for his father’s assassination “will almost certainly be carried out.”
An official statement was published after the burial ceremony for his father, Ali Khamenei, who was killed during the opening strikes of the war between the US and Iran.
The week-long ceremonies attending the burial have seen repeated calls for the assassination of President Trump and key allies.
In his statement, Mojtaba Khamenei pledged to “avenge your pure blood and the blood of all those martyred in these two wars by bringing the criminal and dishonorable killers to justice.”
“This revenge is the demand of our nation, and it will most certainly be carried out. These criminals—whose names are known from top to bottom—will take to their graves the unfulfilled wish of dying peacefully in their beds. They should know that this does not depend on my personal presence or that of any other official.”
He added that the revenge for his father’s death “will be accomplished,” and that “soon, freedom-loving people throughout the world will each carry out part of this divine mission.”
Earlier this week, Israel is reported to have supplied intelligence that Iran was targeting President Trump.
Security concerns apparently led to the President switching planes as he flew back from the NATO conference in Turkey on Wednesday.
On Friday, President Trump made a post on Truth Social in which he said “1000 Missiles are Locked and Loaded and aimed at the Islamic Republic of Iran, with thousands of more to immediately follow, should the Iranian Government act on its threat, pronounced in many corners of the Globe, to assassinate, or attempt to assassinate, the sitting President of the United States of America, in this case, ME!”
