Supreme Court Justice Amy Coney Barrett testified Tuesday about death threats she’d received from leftists following the draft opinion of the court’s decision overturning Roe v. Wade being leaked.
Speaking to the House Appropriations Subcommittee on Financial Services and General Government, Barrett remarked that the leak of the court’s abortion ruling led to intimidation and harassment of her family, resulting in her bringing home a bulletproof vest which she had to explain to her 12-year-old son.
“It is when threats to my life were particularly intense a few years ago around the time of the Dobbs leak,” Barrett recounted.
“My security detail sent me home with a bulletproof vest and I carried it into my house, put it into my bedroom, dropped it down on a table, turned around and my 12-year-old son was standing in the doorway of my bedroom and he wanted to know what it was and why I had it and I didn’t know how to respond because maybe I lack imagination, but I didn’t expect that performing this service was going to put me in the position of explaining to my what a bulletproof vest was and why I had to wear one.”
The Trump-appointed SCOTUS justice also discussed being targeted in a recent swatting incident, saying one of her sons answered the door to a street full of cops, and crediting SCOTUS police with being able to deescalate the situation.
Barrett also said she and other justices have been receiving “threatening anonymous deliveries designed to intimidate and harass us” delivered in the name of US District Court Judge Esther Salas’ son “Daniel,” who was shot and killed by a man who arrived at the judge’s home intending to target her.
“I think the message on these deliveries being sent in his name is clear,” Barrett said, alongside fellow Justice Elena Kagan.
“Federal judges across the country throughout the judiciary including the Supreme Court continue to do their jobs without fear or favor but the threat level is really high,” Barrett added.
Following the justice’s testimony, many online questioned whether recent out-of-character decisions by Barrett and others, including ruling in favor of birthright citizenship and against President Trump’s tariffs, could have been made under duress.
