A former professional football player with a lengthy rap sheet has been deported after living illegally in the U.S. for a decade, authorities say.
Daniel Ogama Adongo, a 37-year-old Kenyan national who rose to prominence as a rugby star, came to the U.S. to play for the Indianapolis Colts in 2013 but his career was short-lived.
In 2015, he was cut from the team after police began investigating a potential violent incident involving a woman at an Indiana residence, ESPN reported at the time.
Adongo’s visa reportedly expired in 2016, but he remained in the country illegally while racking up multiple arrests for felony intimidation and battery and disorderly conduct, as well as a conviction for criminal mischief with damage in 2020.
In March, a Department of Justice immigration judge ordered Adongo’s removal from the U.S.
Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) carried out that deportation on June 20.
“This dangerous individual was clearly a threat to the community, which is now safer since he’s been removed,” stated ICE Chicago Assistant Field Office Director Douglas Thompson.
“Those who violate immigration law are held equally accountable, including former professional athletes.”
