Legendary martial arts actor Chuck Norris died this week in Hawaii at the age of 86 following an unspecified medical emergency.

Norris’ family announced his “sudden passing” on Instagram Friday morning, saying they wanted to keep the circumstances surrounding his death private.

“It is with heavy hearts that our family shares the sudden passing of our beloved Chuck Norris yesterday [Thursday] morning. While we would like to keep the circumstances private, please know that he was surrounded by his family and was at peace.”

To the world, he was a martial artist, actor, and a symbol of strength. To us, he was a devoted husband, a loving father and grandfather, an incredible brother, and the heart of our family.”

“He lived his life with faith, purpose, and an unwavering commitment to the people he loved,” the family wrote.

Norris had been hospitalized on Thursday due to a mysterious medical emergency, with initial reports stating he was “in good spirits.”

The beloved Walker: Texas Ranger actor had just posted a video to Instagram 10 days ago celebrating his 86th birthday.

Norris grew even more popular when his immense strength became a hilarious punchline in the early days of the internet.

The American film icon, who starred alongside martial arts legend Bruce Lee in the 1972 film The Way of The Dragon, was evidently a vocal supporter of Israel, with Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu released a statement lamenting his passing.
