On Wednesday, President Donald Trump posted a lengthy message on Truth Social, reversing his long-standing opposition to warrantless FISA surveillance and now voicing support for it. He had previously opposed the law after accusing the government of abusing it to spy on his 2016 and 2020 presidential campaigns.Trump explained his reasoning for backing the renewal of FISA Section 702 — which targets foreign intelligence collection — even though he was once a victim of related surveillance abuses and could potentially face similar risks again if Democrats regain power.
“I am working very hard with our Great Speaker, Mike Johnson, along with Chairman Jim Jordan and Chairman Rick Crawford, to get a clean extension of FISA 702 through the House of Representatives this week,” Trump wrote. “I am asking Republicans to UNIFY, and vote together on the test vote to bring a clean Bill to the floor. We need to stick together when this Bill comes before the House Rules Committee today to keep it CLEAN!”

“I was a victim of the worst and most illegal abuse of FISA in our Nation’s History, by Radical Left Lunatics, who lied to the FISA Court to spy on my 2016 Presidential Campaign in their attempt to RIG the Election in favor of Crooked Hillary Clinton,” he added. “Their use of this instrument in the 2020 Presidential Election was even worse! When the Dirty Cop, James Comey, the failed Head of the FBI, went after me, he was using FISA Title I, the Domestic Collection, not FISA 702, the Foreign Collection, which needs to be extended today.”
Rep. Jim Jordan (R-Ohio pointed out the current House proposal is “a short-term reauthorization at a time when we’re in a military operation in Iran,” and that “56 different reforms” were put in place two years ago.
Ex-Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene posted a screenshot of a 2024 Trump Truth Social message where he wrote, “KILL FISA, IT WAS ILLEGALLY USED AGAINST ME AND MANY OTHERS. THEY SPIED ON MY CAMPAIGN.”

Rep. Thomas Massie (R-Ky.) said he’ll “be voting NO on final passage of the FISA 702 Reauthorization Bill if it does not include a warrant provision and other reforms to protect US citizens’ right to privacy.”
Rep. Bob Good (R-Va.) asked, “Is it ok if our guys are the ones doing the spying and trampling on the 4th Amendment?”
Rep. Warren Davidson of Ohio also objected to reauthorizing FISA 702 “without any reforms to protect privacy.”
Several other political commentators also criticized Trump’s post.
