After leftist satire news site The Onion preemptively claimed to “own” Infowars last week, the Texas Third Court of Appeals approved an emergency motion by attorneys representing the outlet’s founder Alex Jones on Wednesday.
The court allowed a pause on a state receiver handing Infowars assets over to The Onion, causing the satire site’s CEO Ben Collins to have a meltdown and his followers to violently threaten Jones.
A similar situation unfolded in 2024, when Collins arrogantly boasted he’d won an auction to “buy” Infowars in collaboration with former Democrat NYC Mayor Michael Bloomberg’s anti-Second Amendment group Everytown for Gun Safety.
“We won the bid. We own Infowars,” Collins falsely stated.
Meanwhile, a federal bankruptcy judge ruled in December 2024 that the auction of Infowars was conducted in a flawed manner and establishment news had to report that Collins DID NOT fairly win the bid to purchase the company.
Now, nearly two years later, mainstream media outlets are once again forced to cover The Onion’s takeover being “delayed” while the legal system figures out what’s going on with the situation.
NPR reported, “Jones won a reprieve from a Texas appeals court Wednesday, and the families’ attorneys filed their own appeal to the Supreme Court of Texas on Thursday. Control of Infowars is now in limbo until the higher courts weigh in.”
The Hill pointed out Collins’ company may have committed fraud, writing, “The Onion has already sold Infowars merchandise spoofing Jones, releasing items like T-shirts and tote bags that feature the Infowars logo but with the trademark onion image as the ‘o’ in the logo. Jones has called The Onion’s plan illegal and said the deal will not pass.”
While Collins and The Onion do not currently have control of Infowars, Jones’ network was shut down on Thursday night due to the state-appointed receiver refusing to allow the company to pay its bills, which resulted in its websites going off air and being physically barred from reentering its rental property.
