The Iran War has been “terminated,” President Trump told Congress on Friday, as the 60-day deadline for a Congressional authorization elapsed.
According to the War Powers Act of 1973, within 60 days of notifying Congress of armed hostilities, a president “shall terminate any use of United States Armed Forces … unless the Congress has declared war or has enacted a specific authorization for such use of United States Armed Forces.”
Friday marked the 60th day since Trump notified Congress of military operations against Iran.
“There has been no exchange of fire between United States Forces and Iran since April 7, 2026,” Trump’s letter to Congress states.
“The hostilities that began on February 28, 2026, have terminated.”
Speaking with reporters on the White House lawn, President Trump made the argument that the ceasefire with Iran had effectively “paused” the 60-day period, which meant further action is possible if needed.
“We’re on our way to another victory, a big victory, and I don’t think that it’s constitutional what they’re asking for. These are not patriotic people that are asking,” Trump said, referring to lawmakers looking to restrict his ability to conduct military operations against Iran.
During a hearing of the Senate Armed Forces Committee on Thursday, Secretary of War Pete Hegseth also made the argument that the ceasefire had paused the 60-day period, after Democrat Senator Tim Kaine noted the president could keep US forces engaged for a further 30-day period beyond the initial 60 days without the approval of Congress, so long as the president certified the need for additional action.
Other lawmakers like Richard Blumenthal have disputed whether there is a “pause button” on the War Powers Act, adding that the ongoing blockade of Iran’s ports on the Strait of Hormuz is “a continuing act of war.”
The US Navy has prevented dozens of ships from transiting the Strait of Hormuz and also seized Iranian ships at sea.
Negotiations to move from a ceasefire to a lasting peace have so far proven fruitless.
On Friday, President Trump told reporters he was not satisfied with the terms being offered by Iran.
“We’re doing everything—in terms of negotiating right now, in terms of the negotiation—telephonically,” Trump said.
“They made strides, but I’m not sure if they ever get there.”
