Ukraine’s Dictator Vladimir Zelensky criticized Russia’s use of African soldiers in the war, despite Kiev’s plan to import Africans to replace Ukrainian workers as their supply of European men runs low.
“Although it may be difficult to access news in Moscow right now due to frequent internet outages, they can still feel they are losing every day,” Zelensky said Tuesday. “Just yesterday in Yerevan, we discussed further sanctions steps by our partners, which are needed alongside our own long-range sanctions, and now we have a set of sanctions from the United Kingdom — a serious step. The UK sanctioned 35 individuals and entities involved in the production of Russian drones and in recruiting foreign nationals to produce UAVs and take part in the war against Ukraine. They have been sending citizens from countries in North Africa and the Middle East to the frontline using fraudulent methods. Our intelligence services have been looking into this matter for a long time, so this month there will also be new decisions in this direction as well as further sanctions steps from the United Kingdom. Thank you, Britain! Russia must feel that the war must be brought to an end.”
Moscow has indeed turned to foreign recruits in their war effort.
“The issue of African recruitment has made headlines in recent weeks following the publication of footage showing the apparent mistreatment of African men in the Russian army. A number of videos surfaced on social media in January that appeared to depict the verbal and physical abuse of Africans by their Russian colleagues, who referred to them as ‘disposables‘ and mocked one recruit who was seen with an anti-tank mine strapped to his chest,” The Atlantic Council said in February. “Russian military recruiters have targeted Africa with particular intensity. More than 1,400 African nationals have been identified as serving in the Russian army, with one in five reported dead. These confirmed figures may only represent a small portion of the overall total. The Kremlin is accused of sending African men to fight in Ukraine after first attracting them to Russia with false promises of ordinary jobs or non-combat military roles. Many survivors have complained of finding themselves on the front lines of the invasion with little to no military training.”
Kiev also has plans for Africans, although they are seeking to use the foreigners as replacements to the natives killed in the conflict.
“Volodymyr Zelensky’s head of his Presidential Office in Ukraine, Kyrylo Budanov, has announced plans to import migrant laborers from Africa. Essentially, this entails Ukraine establishing new laws for the legal entry and residence of foreign workers,” Remix News said in April. “The government will introdue a new list of ‘migration-risk’ countries to facilitate this plan, according to remarks Budanov made at the CEO Club Ukraine. ‘They enter, obtain documents, and then move on. This is a problem that creates barriers for business,’ Budanov reportedly said, emphasizing that Ukraine will now move to make it easier for migrants to stay and work in Ukraine.”
While Russia’s use of Africans appears to center around military agendas, Ukraine’s impetus for African importation appears to be about accomplishing the United Nation’s Replacement Migration operation.
