Cameras will be allowed in the courtroom during the trial of Tyler Robinson, the man accused of killing Charlie Kirk.

In a hearing on Friday, the Judge Tony Graf denied the defense motion to prohibit all electronic-media coverage of the trial, saying that the defense had not shown “such a ban on media coverage… is allowed by Utah law.”

Kirk’s widow, Erika Kirk, prosecutors and the media all support allowing cameras in the courtroom for the trial.

The Judge did say, however, that restrictions could be considered on a case-by-case basis.

Media coverage has already caused disruption to the case. A livestream had to be stopped on one occasion when the camera showed the defendant’s shackles, which is considered to be a violation of decorum.

Graf said during the video hearing on Friday that the court has taken steps “to abate threats to the fairness of these proceedings.” “The court has issued a robust decorum order to manage the proceedings in a pretrial publicity order to prevent statements from attorneys involved in the case from potentially prejudicing the jury pool.”

Cameras have now been repositioned in the courtoom to reduce the ability of the media to capture conversations between the defendant and his counsel.

It was reported that during a previous session  Robinson confessed to the murder in a conversation with his attorney.

Although the conversation was inaudible, a New York Post story, citing a lip-reader, claimed Robinson said, “I think about the shooting daily.”

Prosecutors are seeking the death penalty if Robinson is convicted for the murder of Kirk, which took place on 10 September last year, at Utah Valley University.

Prosecutors say Robinson’s DNA was found on the weapon believed to have been used in the shooting, bullet casings, two unfired rounds and a towel that was used to wrap the gun.

The Judge granted a separate motion by the defense to delay a preliminary hearing until July, “in order to protect the defendant’s constitutional rights while minimizing unnecessary delay in preserving the fair and impartial administration of justice.”
