Violent crime has plunged in America’s largest cities.

Data from nearly 70 major law enforcement agencies shows violent crime fell across almost every single category in early 2026 compared to the same period the year before.

The decline is present in every US region—a nationwide trend.

Homicides fell 17.7%.

Robberies fell 20.4%.

Rapes fell 7.2%.

Aggravated assaults—4.8%.

Some of America’s cities saw massive decreases in homicides in particular. In Washington DC, there was a fall of 64.7%; in Philadelphia, 54%; San Diego, 50%; and Memphis, one of the most violent cities in the US, homicides decreased by 34.4%.

President Trump made law and order one of his flagship policies for his second term, sending federal agents and the National Guard in a series of “surges” to cities including Washington DC, Chicago, Portland, Oregon, Memphis and Los Angeles.

In Washington DC, there were over 2,100 arrests in the first 30 days, and thousands more in the weeks that followed.

A “Make DC Safe and Beautiful” task force focused on clearing homeless encampments, targeting violent offenders and seizing guns and drugs.

The Metropolitan Police Department, DC National Guard, federal agents including FBI, and National Guard from other states took part in the surge in the capital.
