Southern California Mayor Steps Down After Being Charged For Acting As “Chinese Agent,” Spreading Pro-China Propaganda

Eileen Wang, the mayor of Arcadia, California, – a town just outside Los Angeles – stepped down from her position on Monday after pleading guilty to being an agent of the Chinese government.

Wang was first charged in April, where she was accused of complying with direct orders from the Chinese government, such as sharing articles favorable to Beijing without registering with the U.S. government as a foreign agent.

The former mayor, who was born in China and came to America just before turning 30, could serve up to ten years in prison after accepting a plea deal.

China’s Communist Party leadership also had Wang’s former fiancé and campaign manager acting on its behalf, and he was sentenced to two years in prison earlier this year.

According to the FBI, the pair “worked together to operate U.S. News Center, a website that purported to be a news source for the local Chinese American community. Wang and Sun received and executed directives from PRC government officials to post pro-PRC content on the website.”

“Individuals in our country who covertly do the bidding of foreign governments undermine our democracy,” said First Assistant United States Attorney Bill Essayli. “This plea agreement is the latest success in our determination to defend the homeland against China’s efforts to corrupt our institutions.”

“Individuals elected to public office in the United States should act only for the people of the United States that they represent,” said Assistant Attorney General for National Security John A. Eisenberg.  “It is deeply concerning that someone who previously received and executed directives from PRC government officials is now in a position of public trust at all, but particularly so because that relationship with that foreign government had never been disclosed.”

“By her own admission, Eileen Wang secretly served the interests of the Chinese government,” said Assistant Director Roman Rozhavsky of the FBI’s Counterintelligence and Espionage Division. “Let this serve as a clear warning: Individuals who act on behalf of foreign governments to influence our democracy will be identified, investigated, and brought to justice. Protecting the rule of law and the transparency of our democratic process remains at the core of the FBI’s mission, and we will continue working alongside our partners to safeguard the integrity of our elections and keep hostile actors from undermining the voices of the American people.”

The story prompts the question: How many other American elected officials are actually Chinese agents?

In California alone, the following Chinese-born individuals are currently in office.

  • Judy Chu: Elected to the U.S. House of Representatives in 2009, representing the 28th Congressional District (San Gabriel Valley).
  • Connie Chan: Member of the San Francisco Board of Supervisors (District 1) since 2021.
  • Chyanne Chen: A current member of the San Francisco Board of Supervisors (as of January 2025), Chen was born in Guangdong, China, and immigrated to the United States at age 15.

Of course, being born in a foreign nation does not automatically make one an agent of that country.

In fact, it’s likely that some U.S.-born politicians are also in the pocket of the CHICOM government.

For example, former Democrat Congressman Eric Swalwell (Ca.) infamously had a relationship with a suspected Chinese intelligence operative named, “Fang Fang,” who may have compromised the ex-representative who recently dropped out of the state’s governor race.

Swalwell dropped out of the gubernatorial race and resigned from Congress last month following allegations that he drugged and raped a woman in 2018.

China might also be infiltrating Canadian politics, with the number of Chinese-born elected officials rising in recent years.

The Mayor of Toronto, Olivia Chow, was born in Hong Kong and uses her position to push far-left globalist policies on the Ontario capital.

In 2024, a Chinese research institute run by the ruling Communist Party as part of its foreign-influence operations compiled extensive profiles of Canadian Parliament members with Chinese ethnicity.

This is not an accusation that any specific individual is acting on behalf of a foreign government. However, it is reasonable for Americans and Canadians to apply heightened scrutiny to foreign-born elected officials — regardless of their nationality of origin — due to potential conflicts of interest, divided loyalties, or susceptibility to influence from their country of birth.
