Couple Scales Empire State Building to Fly Banner, Get Engaged

A couple of air-headed thrill seekers climbed New York City’s Empire State Building on Wednesday, displaying a banner with a message about love and conducting a marriage proposal, as police attempted to nab the pair.

Footage captured the black-clad daredevil couple’s big moment, as a helicopter swirled around the building’s antenna mast while the couple unfurled a banner stating, “When the power of love beats the love of power the world knows peace.”

One of the climbers was then seen on one knee evidently proposing to the other.

Here’s footage from the couple’s vantage point once they reached the top of the 1,400-foot skyscraper:

“When two individuals climbed the spire of the Empire State Building, members of the Emergency Service Unit responded and took them safely into custody,” the NYPD noted on social media, alongside footage of a first responder also climbing the antenna and making contact with the pair.

The couple was identified as Angela Nikolau, 33, and Ivan “Vanya” Beerkus (or Kuznetsov), 32, who were featured in a Netflix documentary dubbed “Skywalkers: A Love Story.”

The New York Post had more details behind the couple’s banner: “The banner’s message is a slightly modified version of a quote frequently misattributed to guitar legend Jimi Hendrix, which was actually spoken by 19th-century British politician William Gladstone.”

Police told CBS News potential charges for the couple could include criminal trespass and reckless endangerment.

The New York Times reported Nikolau was charged with burglary, defined as unlawfully entering a building with intent to commit a crime, but noted its unclear whether Beerkus faces the same charge.

The bonkers stunt led to some high-quality memes:
