President Donald Trump responded to remarks from Chinese President Xi Jinping earlier this week claiming America was a declining nation, saying his comments referred to the period of time Joe Biden served in office.
During opening remarks kicking off a bilateral summit in Beijing on Thursday, Xi referenced the “Thucydides Trap” political theory which posits that the threat of war increases between nations when one overtakes the other as a global power.
“Can China and the United States transcend the so-called ‘Thucydides Trap’ and forge a new paradigm for major-power relations?” Xi asked, apparently referring to the United States as a nation in decline.
Following the brutal comment, Trump took to Truth Social to explain that Xi’s remark actually referred to his predecessor’s administration.
“When President Xi very elegantly referred to the United States as perhaps being a declining nation, he was referring to the tremendous damage we suffered during the four years of Sleepy Joe Biden and the Biden Administration, and on that score, he was 100% correct,” Trump wrote.
“Our Country suffered immeasurably with open borders, high taxes, transgender for everybody, men in women’s sports, DEI, horrible trade deals, rampant crime, and so much more!”
He continued:
President Xi was not referring to the incredible rise that the United States has displayed to the world during the 16 spectacular months of the Trump Administration, which includes all-time high stock markets and 401K’s, military victory and thriving relationship in Venezuela, the military decimation of Iran (to be continued!) — Strongest military on earth by far, economic powerhouse again, with a record 18 trillion dollars being invested into the United States by others, best U.S. job market in history, with more people working in the United States right now than ever before, ending country destroying DEI, and so many other things that it would be impossible to readily list. In fact, President Xi congratulated me on so many tremendous successes in such a short period of time.
Trump added that “Two years ago, we were, in fact, a Nation in decline. On that, I fully agree with President Xi! But now, the United States is the hottest Nation anywhere in the world, and hopefully our relationship with China will be stronger and better than ever before!”
“There was no apparent indication that Xi was referring to Biden in his statement,” ABC News reported.
Xi’s remark reflects China’s growing confidence that it has become a global power to be reckoned with that now holds considerable cards in terms of global trade, with Beijing attempting to make America view Taiwan as part of a unified China, while Trump’s America-first recovery appears to be stalled, amid rising fuel prices, the US being mired in war, and his tariff scheme all but derailed.
