Adults Sucking On Pacifiers To “Relieve Stress”

Some adults have turned to sucking on pacifiers in order to reduce stress and anxiety, according to reports from Vice and The New York Post.

Expectedly, pushback to the neotenous practice has formed, with one social media user saying “Smoke a cigarette you fucking loser.”

The trend is large enough to form an industry around it. Adult pacifiers are being manufactured and sold online, where even expensive luxury pacifiers can be obtained.

“Sleep isn’t coming easily these days. Neither is calm. And for thousands of young adults in China, the solution isn’t therapy, exercise, or even melatonin—it’s adult-sized pacifiers,” Vice said in August. “They’re everywhere on Chinese e-commerce platforms like Taobao and JD.com, selling for as little as 10 yuan (about $1.40) or as much as 500 yuan (roughly $70). They’re marketed as sleep aids, stress relievers, even tools to help you quit smoking.”

A Chinese news website quoted buyers as saying:

“It is high quality, soft, and I feel comfortable sucking it. It does not impede my breathing,” one buyer said on a leading shopping platform.

“It is amazing in helping me quit smoking. It gives me psychological comfort and makes me not so fidgety during my smoke cessation periods,” said another person.

There may however be negative health implications from the use of pacifiers by adults. Vice said:

But medical professionals aren’t thrilled. Dr. Tang Caomin, a dentist in Sichuan, warned that pacifiers aren’t built for adult mouths. Prolonged use can alter your bite, cause joint damage, or disrupt your breathing during sleep. “If you sleep with a pacifier in your mouth,” Tang said, “it can interfere with breathing, and in the worst case, there is a risk of suffocation.”

The phenomenon has apparently been around for a while, as a physiology website explored the topic of adult pacifiers as a stress relief tool in 2022, finding that they may only offer temporary relief but don’t fix any underlying cause to produce permanent solution. They also provided a list of side effects:

  • damage to your teeth
  • misalignment
  • jaw shape changes
  • changes in the roof of your mouth
  • infections in your mouth from germs in or on the pacifier
  • speech problems
  • avoiding finding long-term ways to cope with anxiety

They even recommended throwing the pacifier away.

“You might consider throwing the pacifier away and stopping using it altogether,” PsychCentral said in 2022.
